How to Make Bubble Tea at Home Without Special Equipment

To make bubble tea at home, add 300ml of cold water to a glass, stir in one sachet of fruit tea syrup until it dissolves, add one sachet of popping boba, then top with ice. That is the whole recipe. No kettle, no pan, no stove and no special bubble tea equipment.

The home kits are built around that idea. The Fruit Tea Kit pack states plainly: "No boiling, cooking or brewing required." You do not cook the boba, you do not boil water for tea, you do not need a cocktail shaker or a wide-mouth bubble tea cup. A glass, a spoon and the sachets in the box are enough. If you have made bubble tea before with loose tapioca pearls that need boiling and resting, this is a different process entirely: everything in the sachet is already prepared, so the work is mixing, not cooking.

What you need

  • A tall glass
  • 300ml cold water
  • 1 sachet fruit tea syrup (from the Fruit Tea Kit)
  • 1 sachet popping boba
  • Ice
  • 1 jumbo paper straw

How to make it

  1. Add 300ml of water to your glass.
  2. Add one sachet of fruit tea syrup and stir until it has fully dissolved.
  3. Add one sachet of boba.
  4. Top with ice.

That is the method on the pack. Four steps, no cooking stage, nothing to wait for. A glass and a spoon get you through all four, and the whole thing takes about as long as making a cup of instant coffee.

The other two kits, and how they differ

The same no-cook approach runs through the other kits, but the liquid, the sachet and the boba change. The Milk Tea Kit swaps water for milk (or a milk alternative) and swaps popping boba for instant tapioca pearls, which need no boiling either. The Matcha Tea Kit actually makes two different drinks from one box: two matcha bubble teas made with milk, and two fruit bubble teas made with water. Each has its own sachet pairing, set out below.

What goes into each kit's drinks
Kit Liquid Sachet Boba Makes
Fruit Tea Kit 300ml water Passionfruit or mango syrup Popping boba (strawberry or passionfruit) 4 fruit teas
Milk Tea Kit 300ml milk or milk alternative Classic tea or brown sugar tea powder Instant tapioca pearls 4 milk teas
Matcha Tea Kit, matcha drinks 300ml milk or milk alternative Matcha powder Popping boba (strawberry) 2 matcha teas
Matcha Tea Kit, fruit drinks 300ml water Strawberry tea syrup Popping boba (mango) 2 fruit teas

Instant tapioca pearls and popping boba are not the same thing, and they are not interchangeable in these kits. Tapioca pearls are chewy all the way through; popping boba bursts and releases liquid as you bite it. Each kit is paired with the boba that suits its drink, so the pearls go with milk tea and the popping boba goes with the fruit and matcha drinks. If you want to know the difference before you buy, the popping boba versus tapioca pearls post covers it.

Getting it right

Stir the powder or syrup into the liquid before you add the boba, not after. It dissolves faster while the glass is still clear, and you avoid trying to stir round a glass full of boba once it is in. Add the ice last, once the sachet has dissolved, so it does not sit in warm liquid and melt away before you drink.

The straw in every kit is a jumbo paper straw, not a standard one. Popping boba and tapioca pearls need the wider bore to pass through, so a normal drinks straw will not do the job. Use the straw that comes in the box.

Every kit in the home kits range makes 4 drinks and works the same no-cook way, so once you have made one, the others follow the same four steps with a different sachet in hand. All three are vegan. The Fruit Tea Kit and Milk Tea Kit are £13.49 each, the Matcha Tea Kit is £13.99, and each makes 4 drinks. For the milk tea method written out on its own, see how to make classic milk tea.
